The New York State High School Initiative
began in January 2005 by identifying schools that have the lowest
graduation rates and the highest proportion of students taking three or
fewer Regents exams in four years. The State Education Department is
conducting professional development forums for these schools and districts
on practices that ensure students in academic difficulty get adequate
help.
Through a series of “Destination Diploma” forums, the New York State
Education Department's goal is to create a community of professional
practice among school district teams that have been struggling with these
issues. These teams are joined by State and regional technical assistance
providers and professional organizations. Destination Diploma forums were
held in March and December in Albany. The New York City Department of
Education and NYSED co-sponsored a forum in May.
