Directions to State Education Building

Entrance to the State Education Department is gained through multiple portals. However, all visitors must provide proof of identity at the guard desks. Please have your driver’s license available at check in to prove your identity. We will have visitor identification badges made up in advance for the meeting. They will be on the table at your right of the guard desk.
Please enter the main building up the stairs, through the entrance at 89 Washington Avenue. Other access may be made via the Swan Street or Elk Street entrances. If you enter from either of these portals we will not have identification badges made up in advance. You will need to tell the guards where you are going (217 EB) and show your driver’s license
Please check with Pete James, chairperson of the committee, for any additional transportation/parking options. Currently, there is parking under Empire State Plaza, at a paid lot at 100 Washington Avenue, and on the street. If you use the paid parking lot do not tell them that you are here for a meeting at SED; say you are going to a meeting with your attorney or to see your legislator.
Parking meters use quarters or gold dollar coins. Parking on Washington Avenue and Elk Street are for four hours at a rate of $1.00 an hour. There are 10 hour meters available on Sheridan Avenue. If you park on Sheridan use the parking garage elevator up to the top floor which is across form the Elk Street entrance of the Education Building Annex (EBA).
You may wish to carpool from the Turf Inn, if you are attending a NYAPT committee meeting or from Crossgates Mall, if you are coming in just for the meeting. For Crossgates take exit 24 off of the Thruway and select the Rt. 87 South (Northway) to the Crossgates Mall Road. Those carpooling would then take I-90 East to Rt. 787 South. From Rt. 787 take the Clinton Avenue exit to S. Swan Street. From S. Swan take a right onto Washington Avenue and traverse up the hill to the Education Building. You will receive a list of committee members and their telephone numbers via email from Pete James prior to the meeting.
From the main entrance of the Education Building (EB) take the elevators to the 2nd floor, exit and turn left. The room (217) is on your right after a small waiting/seating area. If you enter from Swan Street, walk down the first floor hallway to the elevators on your left and go to the 2nd floor, etc. If you enter from the Education Building Annex (EBA) or Elk Street, take the elevators to the 3rd floor and walk down the long hallway that snakes left, right and left onto the 1st floor of the main building. Take elevators on right to the 2nd floor, etc.
