The SED endorses the NYAPT
Position Statement: Unattended Bus Practice, and
strongly recommends that all school bus drivers routinely
follow the practice of setting the parking brake, pumping
down the air brakes, and turning the tires in
the appropriate position on their school bus when it is
parked and left unattended as is taught in the School Bus
Driver Basic Course of Instruction. When we remember the
tragic death of eight year old Amber Sadiq, who was killed
on May 22, 2006 in Brooklyn when a young boy broke into
parked school bus and released the parking brake, we realize
the value of pumping down air brakes.
