Technical Assistance Materials for Reading First Eligible Districts
- New York State does not use an
approved list of core, supplemental, or intervention programs for
Reading First. However, LEAs must indicate on their
applications the programs they plan to use for Grades K-3.
Selected core reading programs must be based on scientifically based
reading research, provide direct, systematic and explicit instruction
in all five of the essential components of reading, address various
levels of student need (e.g., accommodations, strategies, lessons for
struggling learners, ELLs), present materials in a sequential,
spiraled format that builds upon previously taught skills, and
include whole and small group instruction.
- The following materials from the
Florida Center for Reading Research and the Institute for Development
of Education Achievement (IDEA) at the University of Oregon, provide a
framework and criteria to consider in evaluating core reading
programs.
