Public School Choice Notifications

Under § 2857, Article 56 of the Charter School Act of 1998, the Board of Regents must provide appropriate notification at each significant stage of the chartering process to the school district in which the charter school is located and to public and nonpublic schools in the same geographic area.  Specifically, the State Education Department on behalf of the Board of Regents notifies the districts of location, public schools, and non-public schools through postal mail and through the Department’s electronic News & Notes and School Executives Bulletin of receipt of any new proposed charter applications, proposed renewal applications, or proposed revisions.  The notified districts of location, public schools, and non-public schools are encouraged to comment on the proposed action; and school districts may hold a public hearing to solicit comments from the community on that proposed action. The Department also notifies the district of location, public schools, and non-public schools of any actions that the Board of Regents has taken related to charter schools.
