Public School Choice Programs is responsible for coordinating the review of
charter school applications and proposed charters. This office makes
recommendations to the Board of Regents regarding the approval or denial of
charter school applications and the approval or return of proposed charters.
The office also coordinates the monitoring of charter schools, administers the
Charter Schools Planning and Implementation Grants Program, and provides
technical assistance to charter schools.
See The Charter Schools Act of 1998, Article 56. The full text of Bill S 2107 provides for several amendments to State law that were enacted in the 2007-08 State budget. Part D-2, beginning on page 119 of the bill, contains amendments to Article 56, the New York Charter Schools Act of 1998, and are known as "Part D-2 of Chapter 57 of the Laws of 2007".

New CSP Planning and Implementation Awards to Begin June 1, 2008. List of CSP Planning and Implementation Grant
Awardees from the March 31 2008 RFP Submission
New 2008-2009 Federal Charter Schools Program Planning and Implementation Grants. This announcement is only for current charter school program grant awardees that have a multi-year grant award contract, and the 2008-2009 program year is either year 2 or year 3 of the contract (which was provided by the NYS Education Department). Those awardees should complete the application for continuation and submit it by close of business June 1, 2008 (postmark date).

New The availability of a Charter School Program Dissemination Grant has been announced on the NYSED Funding Opportunities website at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/funding/currentapps.htm Board of Regents, Buffalo Board of Education and NYCDOE Chancellor authorized charter schools may apply for this grant. Please note the May 23, 2008 deadline. SUNY authorized charter schools should check with their authorizer about availability of these grant funds.

New
An updated website on
General Education & Diploma Requirements, Commencement Level (Grades 9-12) is now
available from the Office of Elementary, Middle, Secondary and Continuing
Education (EMSC). The site provides access to charts highlighting the diploma
requirements for students. The centerpiece of the site is a new chart, which
reflects changes in regulations enacted within the recent past, such as the
phasing out of some local diploma options and the phasing in of new
mathematics examinations and courses. Each column of the chart is linked to a
page that provides more detailed information in html format.
New VESID has announced a new initiative, the Supporting Successful Strategies to Achieve Improved Results for Students with Disabilities Project to identify and promote the replication of effective instructional programs and practices. VESID is seeking to identify schools throughout New York State with high quality instructional practices with documented results in the areas of reading instruction, behavioral support and provision of specual education services and supports to students with disabilities.
New New York State Education Law has been amended, effective June 30, 2007 to conform to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004) and the final federal regulations. When Charter Schools are Deemed Non-Public Schools
Section 2853 [4] [a] of Article 56 (Charter
Schools) of the Education Law covers public and private assistance to charter
schools. It states that for purposes of Sections 701 (Textbook Loan Program),
711 (School Library Materials Loan Program), 751 (Computer Software Loan
Program), and 912 (Health and Welfare Services) of the Education Law, a charter
school shall be deemed a nonpublic school in the school district within which
the charter school is located.
