The National Assessment of Educational Progress

Measuring Student Progress for over 40 Years

NAEP began in 1964 with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation to set up the Exploratory Committee for the Assessment of Progress in Education. The first national assessments were conducted in 1969. Voluntary assessments for states began in 1990 on a trial basis, and in 2002 and 2003, selected urban districts participated in the assessment on a trial basis.  In 2003, the first NCLB-mandated NAEP assessments in reading and mathematics were administered.

NAEP 2007

Who will take NAEP?   Three hundred and forty schools in New York State have been selected by the U. S. Department of Education to participate in NAEP 2007. Schools located outside of New York City were sent notification during June 2006 of what grades and subjects would be assessed. New York City schools will be contacted by the New York City Department of Education. In total, approximately 24,000 New York students from the fourth, eighth and twelfth grades will participate in the assessment.

What is NAEP?  NAEP 2007 will assess reading and mathematics in grade 4; reading, mathematics and writing will be assessed at grade 8; and reading and writing will be assessed at grade 12. Assessments will take about 90 minutes of each student’s time. Selected students will take an assessment in only one subject.

When will NAEP be administered? NAEP will be administered country-wide in selected schools between January 22 and March 2, 2007. In New York State, NAEP will be administered on dates other than those scheduled for State assessments (see http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/osa/schedules/ele06-07dates.htm). Schools selected by the U.S. Department of Education for participation in NAEP 2007 have already been notified of their assessment date.
