March 2 – 6, 2009
The
Book 1s of the Grades 3, 4, and 5 Mathematics Tests each contain a
multiple-choice question that requires measurement with a ruler. In only these large-type
editions, the measurements for these questions will not be consistent with the
expected answers.
The
test book should be administered “as is.” If during the test students using a
large-type edition ask anything about these test questions, they should be told
that the measurement they come up with will probably not exactly match any of
the answer choices and that they should select the choice that seems closest to
their measurement.
At
the time of scoring of the multiple-choice questions, adjustments will be made by
the Department’s contractor, CTB/McGraw-Hill, so that students who use the
large-type edition will not lose credit for these questions.
In
the next week or so, specific instructions will be provided to the principals
of each of the affected schools so that each student who used one of the
affected large-type editions will be accounted for in the database that
CTB/McGraw-Hill uses when scoring the multiple-choice sections of the tests.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we thank you for your continued cooperation.
