The National Assessment of Educational Progress

Measuring Student Progress for 40 Years

NAEP began in 1964 with a grant from the Carnegie Corporation to set up the Exploratory Committee for the Assessment of Progress in Education. The first national assessments were conducted in 1969. Voluntary assessments for states began in 1990 on a trial basis, and in 2002 and 2003, selected urban districts participated in the assessment on a trial basis.  In 2003, the first NCLB mandated NAEP assessments in reading and mathematics were administered.

NAEP 2005 is Coming!

Who will take NAEP?   NAEP 2005 will be administered in a sample of several hundred New York State schools selected by the U. S. Department of Education. Approximately 22,000 New York students from the fourth and eighth grades will participate in the assessment. Dr. David Moore, Acting NY State NAEP Coordinator, will notify selected schools by the end of September 2004.

What is NAEP?   NAEP 2005 in New York will assess reading and mathematics in grades 4 and 8. Assessments will take about 90 minutes of each student’s time.  Demonstration booklets intended to give parents and school
staff an idea of what the assessments will be like are available at:
http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/about/booklets.asp.

When will NAEP be administered? NAEP will be administered on one or two days in sampled schools containing grade 4 from January 24 through January 28, and from February 14 through March 11, 2005.   The administration window for sampled schools containing grade 8 will be from January 24 through March 11, 2005.
