Comments from David Miller:
I have found that students both enjoyed this project and
that it was a stimulating academic exercise. By the time the class was done they really
had a sense of what the era was all about and they could picture it in their minds. Using
pictures instead of just words really made their work feel relevant. More importantly, the
creation of the sixth stanza created a connection for students between the past and the
present. They began to see that what they are experiencing now will someday be considered
history. This made the history aspect more relevant. Another positive byproduct of the
project was the student use of technology. Two groups created web sites (not currently on
line), one made a PowerPoint presentation, and another made a video.
After peer review the original Rubric was improved to
place greater weight upon historical accuracy and a reflective piece was added and
attached to self-evaluation. These recommendations were excellent and mirrored my own
concerns about the research process and the student learning experience. The inclusion of
them in the project was a wonderful addition. The added weight to historical accuracy
provided the emphasis on history that the project needed for students to take the research
seriously.
