Reflection
Personal comments on the learning experience:

This unit was carried out in two urban kindergarten classrooms.

  • One class was a blended inclusion model of thirty-four children, ten of whom were Special Needs children.
  • The second class was a class of twenty-four kindergartners, some of whom are of limited English proficiency. Three of the children are identified as Special Needs.

We found that if activities are developmentally appropriate, all children can experience success.

  • We believe that this social studies unit helped the young children to increase their concept base and broaden their vocabulary.

  • This helps the children to bring new comprehension skills to other important areas such as reading/writing/language.

  • Math concepts are also included in the learning centers such as cash boxes, play money, tape measure.

  • Young children learn by using a variety of modalities and by opportunities to construct their own models both in a structured and a non-structured way. The immersion of the children in this theme in formal and informal activities helps to achieve learning for all children.
