With the assistance and enthusiasm of our Library Media Specialist, Mary Ratzer, I
embarked upon this multi-faceted unit. I gave an overview of the Middle Ages with readings
and lectures on history, art, and socioeconomic development and through the Internet and
CD-ROM materials encouraged students to explore the artistic achievements of the period.
After this initial varied exposure, I gave them black construction paper and colored
tissue papers, assigned each student to work with a partner in order to create a stained
glass window depicting a twentieth century theme in medieval style.
- To begin the research, library books containing examples of medieval art are
reserved and brought to class on a cart to allow students several days of study with the
reserved library books.
- In the library, on the Internet, and at the computer using CD-ROM programs
in French such as Le Louvre and Larousse Multimedia Encyclopedique.
- Students then prepare a written essay about the work of art.
- From the essay, they make a note card to be used in their oral presentation.
- Each student presented to the class a medieval work of art and explained
what could be learned about the period from the particular work.
Following completion of their windows, they establish the Medieval Museum and:
The day of the presentation the class is divided in half and one group refers to their
note cards while discussing their works with the students who visit their exhibits. The
students who are visiting the museum take notes on the works of art they see and write a
short paragraph on each work. The next day, the roles are reversed and the presenters are
the visitors. In addition to the written report, students submit a recording of their
presentation for an oral grade.
Summary: Students did the following
- conducted research on the Internet and using CD-ROMs
- created a tissue paper stained glass window
- wrote an essay
- gave an oral report
- took notes on other students' reports
