Students were involved in a self-monitoring process and in a helping
partnership as well. As we began the experience, we did quite a bit as a class. We all
worked at our computers as my screen was projected onto the wall. Students helped me to
create the spreadsheet and checked the people near them to be sure that everyone stayed
together and that those who needed help were given it. This was a point at which students
were heavily relied upon to coach each other. As the experience progressed, I was
monitoring student progress informally and noting the improvements students made as they
received help and which students appeared to be blossoming as "experts". There
was a combination of observation and group discussion to determine evidence of student
progress towards attaining success.
To rate the finished products, I developed a rubric. The rubric
addressed the spreadsheets, graphs, and written portions separately and the overall score
was determined by combining individual scores.
Project Rubric
Spread Sheets:
4 Spreadsheet is complete, output looks neat and orderly, and
electronic spreadsheet works correctly.
3 Interest calculated correctly, monthly rate calculated
correctly, all columns present as required, AND one calculation error exists or
format is incorrect.
2 One column missing, format incorrect, and errors in
calculations.
1 More than one column missing, only some of the calculations are
correct, OR major errors accompanied by poor cell format.
0 Missing more than two columns OR values are all typed
into spreadsheet without calculations being performed or no spreadsheet present.
Graphs:
4 Correct graphs, axes labeled, and formulas indicating types of
investments are all present.
3 Correct graphs, one labeling error, and formulas are correct, OR
correct graphs, labels, and formulas with error in type of investment.
2 Correct graphs & labels with incorrect percents labeled, OR
correct graphs with many labeling errors.
1 Correct graphs with incorrect labels and percents OR incorrect
graphs with missing labels.
0 Graphs not present OR no graphs reflecting compound
interest.
