Good Communication Skills: What's in it for me?
Reflection
Personal comments on the learning experience:

Why was this lesson developed for the specific learning standards and performance indicators;

This lesson was planned with the notion that students have a need for improved communication skills. Students need improved skills not only with their peers, but in every facet of their lives, including their future careers. Improving these skills also offers the additional benefit of allowing students to feel they can handle their own problems in a more organized, calm and rational way. Certainly, a long-range goal is to improve the students’ communication skills to increase their future marketability.

What I learned from implementing this lesson:

I learned many things from implementing this unit. The students were motivated to begin to change and improve their communication skills when an interesting and fun way was offered. This unit is always one I start my 8th grade classes with because it sets the tone of the class, for the semester.

Discussion of good communication skills allows me to give the students the ability to vent their feeling on how the class is run as long as they are cooperative and follow the rules of good communication.

I learned that students can and do improve their communication skills when they are given the proper incentives and a chance to work at it.

How was the unit reviewed by peers prior to submission and what learned from the review.

    Dr. Rosalie Travers, a full-time professor teaching at Queens College, reviewed this unit.
