Good Communication Skills: What's in it for me?
Assessment Plan
Description:

Manner in which students are involved in developing assessment criteria, maintaining an awareness of their progress, and reflecting on their work:

    Students are involved in developing all areas of assessment for the communication skills unit. Since it is the application of the processes (decision-making, problem solving and resource management), to the knowledge and skills to be gained that should be evaluated, my classes are given a large say as to how and when many things occur. The topic of the written and oral presentation was decided on by a joint vote of my students. The specific method used to gather textbook information and complete a worksheet was a problem solved by my classes. Even the manner of presentation of their school tours, was a decision made by the masses. Part of the learning process in my classroom allows for the students to voice an opinion as to its operation, giving them joint ownership or a vested interest in the everyday running of the class. When it comes to the disclosure of a grade, there is usually an understanding and agreement by the student. At times, this brings about the discussion of improving a grade, which allows some brainstorming and decision as to whether the process can be extended for improvement.

Techniques used to collect evidence of student progress toward meeting the learning standards’ performance indicators:

    Students are always aware of their progress since there is full disclosure of all grades to the students as the unit is continuing.

Tools used to document student progress;

    Students in this unit have the ability to write a rough draft, have it peer-analyzed, and then revise it. They are then videotaped and can evaluate their own presentation by completing the student’s portion of the rubric.
