This is a 7th grade class that meets for 20 weeks.
Students will recognize the importance of the family to individual development, child
nurturing and preserving cultural heritage. Students will understand that the family is a
resource that is managed.
Students will recognize that families teach us our values and help us develop
interests, skills, and goals.
Students will read texts, brainstorm, discuss, ask questions and take notes on
different family forms, functions of families, the family life cycle and how teens can
help families. Students will define, describe and identify the various family forms.
Students will draw, label and explain the family life cycle. They will also be able to
name and explain 3 changes in families that might disrupt this cycle. The student will be
able to explain how various societal changes have affected the family today.
Students will brainstorm, discuss and take notes on events, trends and societal changes
that have affected families in American culture over the course of United States history.
Students will show personally and socially responsible behaviors. Students will show
respect for self and others as they develop skills of cooperation and collaboration while
working on their family portrait projects.
Students will discuss their family celebrations. Students are encouraged to talk to one
another about their cultures and their families as they complete their projects.
Students will have had prior lessons on goals, values, skills and interests. Students
will have explored some possible careers in Family and Childcare (including Parenting).

Students will understand and be able to manage their personal and

Students will read, write, listen and speak for information and
understanding.
Performance Indicators
Listening and reading: Students relate new information to prior
knowledge and experience.
Speaking and writing: Students develop information with appropriate
supporting materials, such as facts, details, illustrative examples or anecdotes, and
exclude extraneous materials. This learning experience fits into several of the
modules for the Home and Career Skills Curriculum.
Module H-1,
Process Skills: This module is addressed in
the subjects of decision making, favorable relationships, preservation of values, tension
reduction and social and economic trends.
Module H-2, Personal Development: The topics What makes
me, me? and How do I relate to others? are discussed in this learning
experience.
Module H-4, Career Planning: Students explore careers
focused on family (including parenting) and realize that families help us develop skills,
values, goals and learning readiness.
