Education
for Homeless Children and Youth Program
Shelia Evans-Tranumn, State Coordinator for Homeless Education
Roberto Reyes,
State Title I Director
Patricia McGuirk,
Homeless Education Program Manager
New York's Education for Homeless Children and Youth program provides support
to ensure that homeless children and youth have equal access to the same free,
appropriate, public education – including public preschool – provided to other
New York children, with the opportunity to meet the same challenging state
content and student performance standards. Every school district is required to
have a homeless liaison whose duties include the removal of barriers to the
enrollment, attendance and success of homeless children and youth in school.
Technical assistance and support to local education agencies (LEAs) is provided
by New York’s Homeless Education Program Manager, Patricia McGuirk (email
or 518-473-0295) and by the New York State Technical and Education Assistance
Center for Homeless Education (NYS-TEACHS or toll free at 1-800-388-2014).
