Far Rockaway High School will continue to run after-school and Saturday programs which will include peer tutoring in many academic areas. Courses in Regents and PSAT/SAT programs will be offered at our Saturday Institute. In addition, we will expand our Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution classes where students will continue to be trained. The after-school sessions will offer parents an opportunity to participate in informational workshops and continue to expose students to music and art enrichment activities. Recreation activities and snacks are also available for students.
Springfield Gardens High School will continue its successful collaboration with the Queens Child Guidance Center. This collaboration allows students to be trained as peer mediators and conflict resolution specialists. The PM school concept will continue and assist students to make up credits, receive peer tutoring, take SAT prep classes and get general academic assistance. Students will also be advised to participate in community service programs at local schools, nursing homes and the VA Hospital. The Council for Unity program will be available to work with students during this time as well. Recreation and parent support programs will be sustained with snacks available to all students participating.
Martin Van Buren High School (MVBHS) will initiate and enhance PM School. In this setting students will be able to make up missing credits and assist in their on-time graduation. Regents preparation and literacy sessions for ESL and other students will be scheduled. It will reduce the need to have students assigned to night school, which places them on the streets and out of their neighborhoods in the early evening and night hours. In addition students will have access to clubs as well as participating in student support activities with school counselors. SPARK, Conflict Resolution and Peer Mediation group sessions will be available for student participation.
