**Program Description**

The proposed ESD/SVP Program at Seward Park HS will provide a comprehensive after-school program for 200 9-12 grade students. The SP After-School Program will operate 3pm - 5pm five days a week from November 2001 thru June 2002. Services will take place on-site in the school building and all school facilities will be available for use by after-school students and staff. After-school services and activities will include:

  • One-on-one or small group tutoring in core academic subjects, including English language arts, mathematics, social studies and science.
  • A Writing Center in the school's library/media center where students can do individual computer (on line) research, write and edit homework and class assignments with peer and adult support or on their own.
  • A Computer and Information Technology Laboratory in which students will learn critical computer applications and online skills, such as internet research and emailing.
  • A College and Career Center in which students will get one-on-one assistance in the college application, financial aid and admissions processes and help in identifying postsecondary opportunities linked to their career interests and aptitudes.
  • Individual and small group counseling to help students and their families address issues impacting negativity on students' ability to perform successfully in school. Counseling will as appropriate, lead to off-site referrals to medical, mental health and social service agencies for students and families.
  • A Wellness Center and use of the school swimming pool to provide physical activities, health and nutrition education.
  • Stress reduction, non-violent conflict resolution and emotional well being support provided for individuals and small groups of students by Friends in Deed, a non-profit community based agency.
  • Connections to the school's existing after-school activities, including clubs, publications, arts and sports activities.
  • Parent orientation, outreach and special events for the families of participating students.

The Seward Park After-School will support improved student performance, reduced intra-school conflict, and improve the education environment of the school, by enabling it to offer a rich menu of activities and services for students.
