**Program Description**
Project SAVE intends to improve student academic achievement and decrease violent and self-destructive student behaviors. To help accomplish this purpose, The Sporting Mind program will provide sixth-year school day and extended day services for targeted students through "The Complete Athlete," a unique program that uses life skills or sports psychology in which participants learn critical mental, emotional and social skills necessary to excel in both sports and school. Project SAVE will also benefit from participation in Classroom, Inc.'s structured program that uses career preparation software similations to reinforce language arts and other curriculum skills and exposes students to real-life situations encountered in jobs. Project SAVE will provide academic and recreational services for 900 Grade 5-8 targeted middle-school students afterschool, from Monday through Thursday, as well as on Saturdays. Selection of participants will focus upon those students who exhibit potentially violent or anti-social behaviors. A second major purpose of Project SAVE is to improve student conflict resolution skills, student self-esteem and parent involvement. To accomplish these purposes The Sporting Mind will incorporate conflict resolution strategies and approaches within their comprehensive Life Skills program for Grade 5-8 students at each middle school and at CS 4 and CES/IS 218. Project staff will also conduct parent awareness sessions at each participant school focusing on group relations and on how parents can assist children through use of violence coping strategies. The third major purpose of Project SAVE is to provide continuing and advanced staff development in both the Sporting Mind Life Skills program and in the Classroom, Inc. workforce software simulations. The workforce simulation curriculum planning is particularly important as part of the Project SAVE's emphases upon supporting school-day academic programs through instructional continuity after school and on the weekend. The Sporting Mind will conduct workshop training for teacher/coaches who will provide vital turnkey training for paraprofessionals and other assistance staff personnel and Classroom, Inc. district trained staff who will conduct curriculum development sessions for teachers representing each Project SAVE site.
