**Program Description**

Community School District 8, in collaboration with members of school-based Leadership Teams and staff from the three cooperation agencies, designed the EXTENDED SCHOOL DAY/VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM to address the acute needs of eight target schools.

One of the five target schools is SURR; poverty percentages in the 90's characterize the schools; achievement levels are low; the number of limited English proficient pupils is increasing; and the communities served by the target sites display unabating and intense poverty. The proposed project will involve the following four highly experienced not-for-profit agencies:

Vision Education- They will provide a projects-based program involving a variety of technology applications that promote the effective learning of standards-based content in the core curriculum areas of English language arts and mathematics.

Learning Through An Expanded Arts Program, Inc.- They will conduct multi-cultural visual arts activities after school at each site. The content of the arts-based projects program will be jointly planned with classroom teachers to ensure curriculum linkages to challenging standards-based core content areas and will provide students with opportunities to create art, use art materials, understand art, and appreciate art.

Periwinkle National Theater Company- the agency will foster students' non-violent conflict resolution skills through an after-school theater arts initiative.

Education and Industry Partnership- The organization will provide school-to-work activities for middle schools student that will help them develop good work habits and find positions as interns industry.

In summary, the project targets 5 schools that are working diligently to help all pupils learn challenging standards-based content. The proposed program will help students to learn non-violent conflict resolution skills and enhance self-esteem that are critical to successful learning.
