**Program Description**

District 75 proposes an expanded comprehensive, sustained violence prevention and extended school day program for approximately 160 students with severe disabilities in middle school and high school located in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn.

The Extended School Day/Violence Prevention project will use multiple interventions. At the individual level, there will be such activities as 1) leadership skills building and violence prevention programming in collaboration with Young Audiences/New York 2) participation in student leadership council activities; 3) mentoring and tutoring opportunities to develop goals in social skills and English Language Arts; 4) a writers residency with the Teachers and Writers Collaborative; 5) small group activities that focus on test skills development; and 6) integration of technology with the English Language Arts standards.

On the family level, the project will promote a sense of community through such activities as: 1) publication of student writing on topics which includes playwriting and scripts which focus on issues relevant to adolescent and the resolution of conflict to be disseminated district wide 2) workshops to train community agencies to effectively address the needs of students with disabilities involved in drug use and violence 3) celebrations of student achievement at the project's "Share Fair" in which students will share their plays, anthologies, and project writings as well as in the Annual District 75 Literacy Fair, the District 75 Technical Solutions Fair, the Very Special Arts Festival, leadership activities and other community events.

The New York City Board of Education Office of Nutrition will provide nutritional snacks free of charge to students under the age of 19 participating in the extended school day program.
