**PROGRAM DESCRIPTION**
The program we are proposing will address the needs of two low performing school buildings. Particular issues at each school include low academic achievement, a relatively high number of suspensions and / or other risk factors for student failure (e.g., history of family violence, low socio-economic status, single parent families).
The goals of the program are threefold:
- To maximize the learning potential of all students
- To increase parent involvement.
- To enhance teacher effectiveness.
Each of these goals addresses the issues faced by each school. Junior High School 45 has opted to implement a nine period schedule. In this model, the regular school day extends into what heretofore would have been known as 'extended day.' The principal and the School Leadership Team decided upon this schedule in order to assure that students in levels 1 and 2 receive the Academic Intervention Services (AIS), which they need to ensure that they met State and City standards. In addition, there are a small group of students who have been identified as at-risk for behavioral problems. The ESD/VPP will support a small student advisory that will focus on values clarification and will allow for the development of a positive, caring relationship between the teacher and the students. The advisory program will include trips ( e.g., college campuses). JHS 45 houses a New York City funded Beacon School Program which brings community based organization into the building to provide educational, recreational and cultural activities.
Junior High School 13 houses both junior high school and elementary students. A needs assessment at this site indicates the belief that improved parent involvement and education would result in improved student achievement. The implementation of a Parent Resource Center that complements an existing extended day program and the support of EPIC will assist parents as they develop their parenting skills and becoming more able to help their own children. In addition, in order to help elementary students manage their behavior and improve academic achievement, staff would like to be trained in and implement Per Dev (perceptual development) exercise. The Per Dev model is designed to enhance the development of perceptual processing and met cognitive utilization of perceptual processes to facilitate learning, emotional development, and social relationships.
We believe that the program we are proposing will provide our students in the targeted school who are not meeting the state and City performance standards with services that are focused on skill development, both academic and social, and on the enhancement of critical thinking. The programs are aligned with the standards and ensure high expectations for all students.
