**PROGRAM SITE**

Community School District 3, in collaboration with members of school-based governance teams and staff from each site as well as representatives from the four cooperating agencies, designed the EXTENDED SCHOOL DAY/VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM EXPANSION to address the acute needs of the target schools.

The four target schools are Priority Schools; high poverty percentages (reaching as high as 96% in one site) characterize the schools; achievement levels are low; and the communities served by the target sites display unabating intense poverty.

The 2000-01 Extended School Day and Violence Prevention program Expansion will build upon the many successes of our 1999-2000 initiative. The proposed project will support extended day enrichment activities in technology and music; a theatre arts nonviolent conflict resolution skills development training program; and parent engagement activities. All proposed activities will complement and support systemic reform activities under way at each site that are designed to help ALL pupils learn challenging content. The proposed project will involve the following four highly experienced not-for-profit agencies:

  1. Vision Education- They will provide a projects-based program involving a variety of technology applications that promote the effective learning of standards-based content in the core curriculum areas of English, Language arts, and Mathematics.
  2. Singers Forum- the organization will provide an ensemble-based workshop at two sites. Its program introduces children to the fascinating world of musical performance.
  3. Manhattan Theater Source- The agency will foster students' non-violent conflict resolution skills through an after-school theater arts initiative for middle school students.

In summary, the project targets four schools that are working diligently to help all pupils learn challenging State contest. The proposed program will help students to learn nonviolent conflict resolution skills and enhance self-esteem (through arts and sports activities) that are critical to successful teaching and learning.
