Program Description
Our Extended School Day and Violence Prevention Program has been conceptualized by school staff working in close collaboration with personnel from our two collaborating agencies, the Leadership Program, Inc. and Learning Through An Expanded Arts Program, Inc. in response to the needs detailed in the prior section of this application.
The Leadership Program, Inc. will implement its proven effective Leadership Program (a sixteen-component initiative that focuses on goal orientation, personal and social responsibility, and conflict resolution). The Leadership Program has been implemented in more than 150 schools across the city and has recently been awarded a $5 million grant from the United States Department of Education-Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Office to demonstrate its ability to radically change the culture of a failing school in Central Harlem. The Leadership Program is responsive to need number one (in the prior section of this proposal).
Learning Through An Expanded Arts Program, Inc. has a 20-year history of providing exemplary arts-based services in more than 500 schools across the city. This agency will implement an extended school day program focusing on music and dance. The content of the extended school day program will complement and be aligned with the standards-based content taught during the regular school day, and is responsive to need number two defined in the first section of the narrative.
Services will be evaluated using formative protocols (e.g., counts of participants) as well as pre-and post-program testing using validated instruments developed by the Leadership Program, Inc. .
