**Program Description**
This proposal is designed to provide a comprehensive prevention model that will promote an ethos of non-violence in CSD 22's schools. Often extreme forms of physical violence are highlighted and addressed while non-physical forms e.g. bullying, gender-based violence, and racism are ignored and/or tolerated by school staff.
The proposed project will address all forms of violence and will help schools to adopt a whole-school community assisted approach to address issues of violence.
This project will have three components:
- Training of Staff and Parents to the systemic approach to Violence Prevention
- Implementation of School-wide Violence Prevention Programs for students
- Extended School Day/Weekend enrichment services
The training component will provide training/training materials to parents, administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, SAPIS counselors, paraprofessionals, and school aides in the Hazelden Inc. Respect and Protect Violence Prevention Program and their No Bullying Program at selected schools sites. Training/training material will also be provided by parents, administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, SAPIS counselors, school aides in the Life Skills Training Program authored by G.J. Botvin, Ph.D. of the NYU - Cornel Medial Center, in District 22's schools. Six district schools, four (4) elementary and two (2) intermediate schools, are participating in the Respect and Protect Violence Prevention Program. Training will continue to support of the core teams at each participating sites in developing and implementing the Violence Prevention Program.
The trained staff will utilize the Hazelden Inc. No Bullying curriculum, and Cornell's Life Skills Training curriculum with students in Grades K-5. Cornell's Life Skills Training curriculum for selected intermediate schools will also be used with students in grades 6-8. This will enhance student conflict resolution, and anger management skills. Student support groups will be an integral component in this effort. Students will develop non-violent social skills needed to resolve normal conflicts and improve general competence, thereby reducing incidents of violent behavior in district schools and in the extended community.
The Extended School Day/Weekend components implemented at individual school sites will provide a safe environment of enriched educational and recreational activities in which students may practice and develop group interaction skills, improve their academic performance, and engage in positive alternative activities. These programs may also include, where appropriate, parents learning alongside their children in family/school activities that prepare the parents to be meaningfully involved in their child's education.
