**Program Description**
District Two's Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention Program will be a coninuatuion with an expansion of the current program. District Two will collaborate with three organizations ( The Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New York, Inc., City Lights Youth Theatre, and Seagram's After School Program) in order to provide services to PS 11 and P.S. 198. Participating students will be drawn from the approximately 1,487 students at the four schools, with program activities open to all students. It is estimated that approximately 970 students will participate in program activities.
The Program will have the following three goals:
- To provide students with structured school-based before/after-school activities designed to positively channel their energies, and experience success and positive interactions.
- To increase students' abilities to meet high, challenging standards in literacy and mathematics
- To reduce the number and intensity of violent incidents in the schools.
Each site will have a combination of services and activities that addresses the needs their school, and that is in keeping with the goals of this program. Activities and services will be structured around two program components:
- Academic and Extracurricular Programming
- Conflict Resolution/Violence Prevention
Professional development will be provided for the teachers in the Extended Day academic programs through other District funds.
P.S. 11 will focus on Academic and Extracurricular Programs and will serve approximately 115 students and their parents. ESD/SVP program funds will be used to provide a "Getting to Know New York City" enrichment program, a "Parent/Child Breakfast Club" program, an After-School Basketball sports program, and support a "Big Brother/Big Sister" program for at-risk students. PS/IS217 will focus on the Conflict Resolution/Violence Prevention and Academic and Extracurricular Programs. The Conflict Resolution program will serve all 479 students (the entire school) whereas the Extracurricular program will serve approximately 50 students. After-School academic programming will be provided by the schools' current after-school academic intervention program and supported with local funds. ESD/SVP Program funds will provide a sports program offering both Volleyball and Basketball to students. It will also support peer mediation and training for teachers, parents, also Conflict Resolution for students. P.S. 198 will focus on both Academic and Extracurricular Program. ESD/SVP program funds will provide for an after school Computer enrichment program, an after-school math program (school store), which will be coordinated with the current after-school literacy program. In addition, program funds will provide for a chorus, which will meet for one hour before school each day, and an arts program that will meet for two hours each day after-school. Sports activities will be coordinated through the school's Beacon Program. (Approximately 150 students will be served.) P.S.151 will continue its focus on academics for 75 students, with two after-school literacy programs-one that targets at-risk English language learners and one that targets at-risk English proficient students. In addition, P.S. 151's program will be expanded to include an after school visual arts program and a drama club. These two programs will serve approximately 100 students, 25 in the visual arts component and 75 in the drama club.
