Program Description
Project Reclaim, Community School district 19's extended day/violence prevention Program, will collaborate with four community-based organizations to provide a wide array of dynamic activities that will stimulate higher expectations and higher standards while fostering positive values and combating propensities toward violence. Proposed program offerings will include: homework help and academic tutorials; hands-on science; visual, dramatic, and physical arts; discussion related to violence avoidance, particularly as appropriate to the after school activities as well as to the temptations of the surrounding communities; parent training; educational/cultural field trips; and the development of fair play and sportsmanship through athletics. Activities undertaken through this grant will not supplant existing district or outside initiatives, but will supplement and wrap around current day and after school programs and cover those schools which do not currently have such programs but which have demonstrated need for them. Program activities will extend school time by two/two and half hours daily with some additional Saturday sessions so as to maximize parent support and participation in conjunction with program goals. The grant will fund activities at four SURR schools (PS13, 72,158, and 190) and at one school at risk of being given SURR status (PS328); while other TASC, Beacon, and private funding serves the remaining SURR and at-risk schools. The NY Junior Tennis League Program will not include tutorial services, but it is essential to supplement the other district components and to provide a means of attracting additional students to become involved with program activities.
