Community School District 17 conducted a multi-faceted needs assessment to select target schools for the Extended School Day and Violence Prevention Program. Need assessment activities included a review of Priority Status and Title 1 Schools In Need of Improvement Status; review of other programs operating in the schools; level of pupil suspensions and incidents; a review of community facilities; and review of parent participation levels.
The Extended School Violence Prevention Program will serve ten-target schools. The project is a collaborative effort involving the ten target schools and the Leadership Program, Inc. Each school will receive two units of the Leadership Program. The Leadership Program is described and detailed in the charts accompanying this narrative. The Leadership Program has demonstrated success in New York City schools in preventing precursors to violence, and provides teachers with the strategies necessary to offer students non-violent conflict resolution skills. Middle Schools 2 and 390 will also implement a theater art after school program.
Each of the ten target sites will also implement extended school day programs that focus on standards-based core content areas using a projects-approach that allows pupils to discover knowledge through hands-on activities. In summary, the Project will help students deal nonviolently with conflict; develop leadership skills; and learn standards-based content during extended school day hours.
