**Program Description**

Community School District 16 proposes to continue and expand upon the very successful Extended School Day and Violence Prevention 1999-2000 program. We plan to continue extended day programming that focuses on conflict resolution, violence prevention, racial and cultural awareness, and most importantly, academic excellence.

Through the use of leadership teams, we intend to encourage parents to participate in school governance, support their children both academically and socially, and to develop leadership skills as models for their children. It is anticipated that through further program development and implementation we will promote the improvement of student achievement, thereby decreasing absenteeism, retention and dropout rates, and reducing and preventing school violence. CSD 16'S proposed application seeks to emphasize school building initiative including strong curricula with challenging academic standard, fostering and developing positive attitudes in students toward learning, teaching and peers.

The school-based project at the 12 sites will be further enhanced through thematic cycles, academic rigor, violence prevention, arts and cultural programs, sports with building specific focus and needs, conflict resolution, technology and telecommunications, balanced literacy and performing arts. Schools, community based organizations, social and health agencies, arts and cultural institutions, educational facilities, and the local law enforcement agencies will encourage and promote the active involvement of youth to enhance their personal development while improving their social awareness and their awareness of community needs.

Extended day activities will enable youth to participate in stimulation and strong curricula with challenging academic and performance based standards, mentor relationships, community services, non traditional classroom settings to meet different learning styles and provide opportunities for all children to learn and link schools and homes, and involve parents in the education of their children.
