The District 15 Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention program will provide a comprehensive extended day/violence prevention program in eleven elementary schools and four middle schools that serve the neediest communities in the District. The program will follow the State Education Department's school-based building level intervention model. The model's program components that will be included in the ESD/SVP Program are extended day programming, conflict resolution/violence prevention and parent rooms/parent involvement. The goals of the ESD/SVP Program are:

  • To prepare students to meet high, challenging standards in the area of literacy
  • To extend opportunities for academic and personal growth beyond the normal school
  • To improve participants' ability to solve problems without resorting to violence
  • Strengthen parents' ability to support their children's educational, personal and social development.
  • The project will provide direct services to students in grades PreK through 8 and parents from the participating schools-P.S. 1,10,15,24, 27,32,38, 94,124,169, and 172 ; MS 51,88,429,and 821.
  • The program will serve at least 40 students at each elementary school and 60 at each middle school, and will serve approximately a total of 2,000 students, including those served through the District's cbo partners.

Consistent with the school-based intervention model, the project design may vary somewhat from school to school in order to make the best use of existing resources and to best meet the needs of each school community. All schools will run structured, academically oriented extended day activities with a focus on literacy development. In combination with academics, participating schools and cbo's will conduct a variety of other extended day activities that include the arts, recreation, theatre, clubs, youth leadership development, health education, community services and support services. Schools will have the flexibility to determine their own extended day schedules within the state's guideline for extending the overall school day for a minimum of two hours. Schools will also be involved in the conflict resolution/violence prevention component in a variety of ways. Three schools (PS 15,24, and 169) will take part in intensive staff development and in-class conflict resolution as part of the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program conducted by District 15 and Educators for Social Responsibility. Other schools will receive peer mediation training for use in the classroom and in after-school activities. Some schools are collaborating with local agencies in school-based violence prevention pieces that meet local needs by nurturing problem-solving and decision-making skills. Participating elementary schools have parent rooms that will be used as part of the ESD/SVP Program. The parent involvement component will also encompass parent workshops, family gatherings and parent coaching for peer mediators. The program will Provide staff development in literacy, and both staff and parents will be trained in conflict resolution. Related support services will include individual and group counseling, school-based health services and appropriate referrals.

Good Shepherd Services will serve as the major collaborative agency in the program. In fact, the ESD/SVP Program in collaboration between the district and a number of community-based organizations (see list in section 5 of this proposal) with deep roots in the community and extensive experience in operating educational, youth development and parent involvement programs. This collaboration will help to access a variety of resources provided by the District and its partners that will supplement the grant funds. By building upon the related services currently available in the community and synthesizing the different components into a comprehensive extended day/violence prevention program, the ESD/SVP Program will best serve the neediest schools, students and families in the District 15 community
