**Program Description**
At each target school, approximately 50 students in grades three through eight will participate in all ESD/SVP extended day activities. This program will run for 20 weeks from January to June 2002, operating three days a week afterschool and on Saturday mornings. Building on the program implemented during the previous academic year, this program will have an overarching focus on conflict resolution and violence prevention, and will respond to the multifaceted needs of students and parents by providing the following services: academics tutoring; group and individual conseling; recreational activities; arts education activities; parent involvement activities; and staff development.
The afterschool program will be held three days a week from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and students will participate in a total of three hours of academic instruction, two hours of recreation, and one hour of group counseling, as well as individual counseling sessions on an as needed basis. This program component will be staffed by three Board of Education teachers and one Board of Education guidance counselor per school. In addition, parent volunteers will assist with attendance monitoring and classroom instruction.
The Saturday program will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and will include arts education/conflict resolution workshops designed by consultants from Learning Through an Expanded Arts Program (LEAP); recreational activities led by one Board of Education teacher per site; and group and individual counseling sessions on an as-needed basis with a Board of Education guidance counselor per site. Furthermore, parents will volunteer with attendance monitoring and recreational activities, and they will participate in a support group facilitated either by a Board of Education guidance counselor or by another professional trained in providing parents with the resources to identify and respond to students' risk-taking behavior.
Last year each school created a school safety team, supported through training by the Upstate Center for School Safety. The team members attended training and developed safe school plans at each of the four schools in order to begin to build a cohesive culture of non-violence in the schools and to establish the schools as safe havens for students to learn and grow. This year, each school is prepared to implement the plans. The school safety teams will facilitate accomplishment of the activities described in the plans, e.g. reviewing data, developing handbooks, developing publicity/communication mechanisms, and publishing discipline policies and consequences.
Furthermore, the four program coordinators and all ESD/SVP teachers will attend staff development sessions led by LEAP facilitators and aimed at improving their knowledge of the social and academic issues facing their populations of at-risk students. Each school will host two hour-long sessions, with staff from all four target schools attending.
Finally, students and parents at each school will have the opportunity to attend a culminating trip.
