**Program Description**

The Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention Program offers two District 18 middle schools, IS 211 and IS 285, the opportunity to custom tailor their programs as they strive to reach common project goals. The four overarching goals are:

  • To provide academic instruction in mathematics and reading/literacy to allow participants to achieve high standards and develop an improved attitude toward academic studies while learning conflict resolution skills;
  • To provide recreational activities and conflict resolution/violence prevention sessions in an extended day program that offers students a safe, nurturing environment during and after school hours;
  • To promote partnerships that will increase parental involvement and participation in promoting the social, emotional and academic growth of children;
  • To enhance the ability of staff to serve as significant, caring adults in the lives of middle school children and support their emotional and social development.

In the program that will continue at IS 211, students and families will be involved in activities that combine the strengths of their own school staff with the wide variety of programs offered by the Sports and Arts in Schools (SAIS) Foundation, Academic sessions in reading and mathematics will be conducted by licensed teachers, ensuring high quality instruction and alignment of curriculum with New York City and New York State standards. Additional sessions will include, but not be limited to, chorus, instrumental jazz, conflict resolution/violence prevention rap sessions, and television production linked to literacy in IS 211's state-of-the-art television studio. SAIS will engage students in their tennis, basketball and college awareness programs. Basketball clinics run by Youth Support Services will take place until mid-spring. At that time, tennis activities conducted by the New York Junior Tennis League will begin. The sports activities will be part of the overall after school program. To ensure that families are able to attend, the Early College Awareness Program will be conducted on Saturdays. Furthermore, families in need of additional services will be connected with appropriate health, immigration, psychological, welfare, and educational agencies.

At IS 285, the collaboration with the Progressive Youth Empowerment (PYE) Beacon program forms the foundation for their ESD/SVPP. Their program will combine the PYE program offerings with the academic, social, cultural, guidance services for students and their families, arts, and recreational sessions conducted by school staff. These sessions will include math enrichment for at-risk students, peer tutoring, library research and communication, chess, choir, step team, steel band, guidance services, conflict resolution rap sessions, and basketball. The Sports and Arts in Schools will conduct Early College Awareness sessions for students attending IS 211 and IS 285 at their home sites. This program was well-received last year and should enhance the ESD/SVPP at both schools again this year.

Both schools will be integrating the ESD/SVPP funding with the funding they receive from Title I, PCEN, Middle School Drug Coordinators program, federal Abstinence program, and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Mentoring (JUMP) program. In addition, the ESD/SVP program funding at IS 211 will be integrated with funding from 21st Century Community Learning Centers and The After-School Corporation. ESD/SVPP funding will be used to supplement not supplant the funding received form all other sources. The result will be extensive programs that offer a safe haven for adolescents in the critical after school hours, providing positive alternatives that engage students and their families in activities selected to meet their needs and interests.
