Family Dynamics, a member of SCO Family of Services, is committed to providing youth and families with an academic and recreational program that is developmentally appropriate and safe. Housed within its Beacon Center at the Stephen Decatur School at MS35, the Family Dynamics Extended Day Program is designed to develop academic competencies, promote creative expression and build on social and emotional skills that help youth avoid violent and negative behavior.
Statistical evidence points out that violent crime by and against youth are most likely to occur during out-of-school time hours when youth are left unsupervised. The Family Dynamics Extended Day Program provides youth with the opportunity to engage in fun, safe, recreational activities that allow them to develop their social and emotional competencies with the support of trained staff, as well as with the active involvement of their families and communities.
The Extended Day Program serves grades 6 to 12 and operates Monday through Friday, from 3pm to 6pm from September to June. All activities are grounded in a youth development philosophy that supports the development of strong communication and critical thinking skills, as well as self-esteem. All programs at the Family Dynamics Beacon Center are designed to engage parents and the community in the participant’s learning. Parents are encouraged to be involved in their children’s education and in the school community. All program participants are also encouraged to be involved with the design and implementation of community service activities to fulfill their responsibilities as contributing members of society.
