Children's Advocacy Network of New York (SCAN) Contact:
Larry Lee, Deputy Director Program Description SCAN's request for funding is to leverage and sustain existing public and private funds that together would be used to provide a range of Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention activities serving approximately 700 students at C.E.S.53 AND C.E.S. 42. Complementing existing activities and resources at each school, the objectives of each after-school program are to: 1) Promote educational enhancement and remediation; 2) Enhance parental involvement in children's school experience; and 3) Promote violence prevention and conflict resolution. At C.E.S. 53 and C.E.S. 42 these objectives will be achieved by enhancing an existing program through the addition of new resources that will focus on violence prevention and conflict resolution. Proposed funds will be used to carry out the above-stated objectives by providing for professional training for staff, and especially parents who want to work, to develop and provide appropriate violence prevention and conflict resolution activities for children. Requested funds will pay for: three (3) Activity Specialists; Parent Mentors who help to lead groups of 25 children each; two (2) Group Leader Supervisors (a teacher, para-professional or parent) to oversee and supervise the Parent Mentors; and one (1) Activity Coordinator designated to recruit and train parent mentors, and organize violence prevention/conflict resolution curricula designed with school faculty and aimed at helping parents lead violence prevention student activities.
