Harlem Children's Zone,Inc. in partnership with the A.Philip Randolph School/PS 76, Hans Christian Anderson Complex/PS 242, and Sojourner Truth/PS 149 is applying to the New York State Department of Education to continue to provide an Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention (ESD/SVP) program for 200 children (50 at PS 76, 50 at PS 149 and 100 at PS 242) in grades K-5 in the 2004-2005 school year. The proposed ESD/SVP program will provide 15 hours a week of academic, social and recreational programming that is designed to produce outcomes that meet or the No Child Left Behind mandate. Students who participate in the ESD.SVP program will have full access to Harlem Children's Zone Project which provides a neighborhood-based system of critical supports and services that begins when a child is born and continues until the child graduates college. At each school, the ESD/SVP program will be supported by our Peacemakers,Americorps funded, College age interns. Peacemakers will work side-by-side with parents, teachers, and school staff during the school day and in the after school program. Regina Garrett, HCZ's Director of Education will continue to be the Program Director for the ESD/SVP program. They will report directly to Ms. Garrett. The ESD/SVP program will provide activities including: a) n in-school component where Peacemakers are assigned to assist teachers in each K-5th grade classroom; b) intensive academic support, tutoring and remediation during the school day and in the after-school hours; c) SMART, (Shaping Minds around Reading and Technology) a computer-assisted literacy program; d) the creation of a safe environment for learning at each school; e) parents positively  involved in their children's education, working cooperatively with teachers to achieve common goals; f) access to a neighborhood-based system of critical supports and services that begins when a child is born and continues until the child graduates college and g) Summer Enrichment, a literacy-based summer program.

Our Peacemakers will provide a consistent and supportive presence at each school to prevent violent incidents during crucial periods during the school day, such as breakfast, recess, lunch, dismissal, and during the after-school hours. Peacemakers will work with The Parent-Teacher Association at each school to sponsor conflict resolution/mediation training the parents. The parents who have received training will "model" appropriate behavior for other parents in the school. Parents will also assist the Peacemakers in planning our Children's March for Peace, which takes place at the end of our Summer Enrichment program in August.
