Program Description
The Latino Educational Community Association, Inc. (LECA) is a not-for-profit educational and human service organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Latinos (although not limited strictly to Hispanics), particularly those residing within urban communities plagued by poverty, unemployment, crime, delinquency and under education. LECA is primarily concerned with addressing the needs of youth and their families, providing the resources needed to encourage educational and, ultimately, professional success. LECA is a member of an established social service agency network, Local Area Services Consortium (LASC), under the umbrella of the Hispanic Federation. LASC works to address community concerns including youth violence, drug abuse and AIDS prevention, youth empowerment, and professional achievement through the provision of educational programs.
The target community is Bronx Neighborhood Development Area #5, which encompasses the Fordham/Tremont/Burnside section of the Bronx. LECA plans to continue servicing Middle School students in grades 5 through 8, between the ages of 9 to 14 along with their families. The middle school we will service is located in School District #10, the most overcrowded district in the entire city.
