School Improvement and Community Services

The Office of School Improvement and Community Services (NYC), under the direction of Associate Commissioner Shelia Evans-Tranumn, is responsible for school improvement and closing the achievement gap by building the capacity of schools and districts. The Office directs and coordinates State Education Department services and technical assistance to the New York City school district and education community, including oversight of Contracts for Excellence implementation in New York City.  The office also has statewide responsibility for the Department’s initiatives in the areas of School and District Accountability, School Improvement, Early Childhood Education and Reading, Migrant and Homeless Youth, Parent Involvement, and Title I/Compensatory Education.  The office manages over $4 billion dollars of State and Federal allocations to public schools, including approval of grants and monitoring of their implementation.
