To the Members of the 2008 Legislature of the State of New York:

At this legislative session you will need data that are readily available and helpful in making major decisions on the commitment of State resources for education. I hope that the information presented in this booklet, which is revised annually, will partially satisfy that need.

The booklet includes information on status and trends in educational enrollment, expenditure, local assistance, Federal aid, staffing and student financial aid. The data portray something of the progress and tremendous growth of the educational system within New York State, as well as the many problems and needs confronting us. The booklet includes trend statistics for several years.

Only a brief summary of selected data is included here. In the course of your deliberations you may need additional information. Be assured that the Education Department will make every effort to provide it at your request.
