Eligibility Requirements and Necessary Documentation

 

The following table is a list of eligibility requirements and the corresponding attachments to the GED application candidates under the age of 19 will need in order to be qualified to sit for the test.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

REQUIRED PROOF

A-1 Verification of identity, residency and age

(19 years or over on day of testing)

Driver's license, passport, military, or other forms of government (national or foreign) identification which show name, address, date of birth, signature and photograph are all acceptable.

B-1 Verification of identity, residency and age

(17 or 18 years old on day of testing)

Driver's license, passport, military, or other forms of government (national or foreign) identification which show name, address, date of birth, signature and photograph are all acceptable.

C-1 Verification of identity, residency and age

(16 years old on day of testing)

Driver's license, passport, military, or other forms of government (national or foreign) identification which show name, address, date of birth, signature and photograph are all acceptable.

B-2 One year has passed since applicant was legally able to leave school and last enrolled in a regular full time high school program

(17 or 18 years old on day of testing)

Verification Form - to be completed by an official of the school district last attended by the applicant.

B-3 Applicant was a member of a high school class that has already graduated

B-4 Applicant is enrolled in an approved Alternative High School Equivalency Preparation (AHSEP) Program

(17 or 18 years old on day of testing)

Verification Form - to be completed by an official from an approved AHSEP program.

B-5 Applicant has applied to the U.S. Armed Forces, college, university or an accredited postsecondary institution

(17 or 18 years old on day of testing)

Verification Form - to be completed by a recruiting officer or college/university admissions official.

B-6 Applicant has been a participant in a Job Corps program for at least six (6) months

(17 or 18 years old on day of testing)

B-7 Is a resident confined to a narcotics addiction control center, Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) facility, jail or Department of Correctional Services (DOCS) facility, or is a patient in a hospital in the State of New York

(17 or 18 years old on day of testing)

Verification Form – to be completed by an official of the facility/institution certifying that the applicant is confined to the facility or institution and the HSE diploma is an essential part of the rehabilitation process.

B-8 Applicant is an adjudicated youth under the direction of a prison, jail, detention center, parole or probation officer.

(17 or 18 years old on day of testing)

Verification Form – to be completed by an official from the institution or facility certifying that the applicant is under the direction of the facility or institution and the HSE diploma is an essential part of the rehabilitation process.

B-9 Applicant is 17 or 18 years of age and has been home schooled.

Verification Form- to be completed by an official of the school district in which the applicant resides.

C-2 Applicant is in an approved Alternative High School Equivalency Preparation program (16, 17, or 18 years of age on day of testing and has reached maximum compulsory school attendance age)

Verification Form - to be completed by an official from an approved AHSEP program.

C-3 Applicant has applied to the U.S. Armed Forces, a college, university or an accredited post-secondary institution.

(16 years old on day of testing and has reached maximum compulsory school attendance age)
