The Principals’ Center at the Harvard Graduate School of Education is an organization dedicated to the personal and professional development of school principals and the many other stakeholders who crucially influence the character and quality of schools. The Principals’ Center is offering a demanding and rewarding Institute planned for summer 2006. The Institute has assembled an outstanding cadre of Harvard faculty, educational consultants, and school practitioners for an intensive nine days of professional development. The Institute, “Leadership: An Evolving Vision” will be held July 24 – August 1, 2006, and will feature the following curriculum:
Accountability - Examine accountability systems.
Data Feedback - Develop an academic improvement system that provides specific and meaningful feedback to students and faculty.
Instructional Leadership - Knowledge about good teaching and learning lies at the heart of real instructional improvement.
Change - Examine schools in relation to the community - exploring race, culture, equity, special education and social justice.
Bias - Learn to recognize and eliminate bias.
Leadership - Reflect on your personal leadership style and understand its effect on others in the school community.
Equity and Excellence - Develop strategies for fostering student achievement.
Supervision - Confront mediocre teaching.
Communication - Learn to communicate effectively with all stakeholders.
Vision - Learn to involve others in creating school vision.
Adult Development - Examine how the formative experiences of staff members influence communication with other schools.
School Culture - Provide a school culture that welcomes all members of the school community.
School Reform - Discover how reallocating resources can change the focus of a school reform effort.
The Institute includes a variety of teaching and learning formats to ensure that participants derive the maximum benefit from their interactions with faculty and each other. This structure includes:
Large group presentations
Follow-up activities
Process groups
Reflective writing
Independent reading
Team building
To raise student achievement through effective leadership development programs ensuring that school administrators are exposed to current strategies, resources and support that will maximize their chance for success.
The New York State Education Department will award competitive grants to appointed principals from Title I schools to attend the Harvard Principals’ Center’s "Leadership: An Evolving Vision". The Title I schools must be:
Charter schools;
Schools under Registration Review (SURR);
Schools in Need of Improvement (SINI);
Schools participating in the School Quality Review Initiative (SQRI) and/or;
Schools participating in the Regents High School Initiative.
The New York State Education Department will award twelve grants in the amount of $4,857 per principal, as follows:
Tuition: $2,595. This amount includes all materials, daily lunch, break refreshments and a one-year membership in The Principals’ Center.
Accommodations: $1,962. This is for nine nights at the Charles Hotel at $218 per night, including taxes, gratuity and daily breakfast.
Travel Expenses: $300.
Completed cover page, program narrative, superintendent’s statement of assurance, principal’s statement of assurance, application (including requested essay) and FS-10 budget form must be submitted to:
