Question: Our charter school currently leases its facility; a renovated K-Mart building. After five years of leasing and according to our lease agreement, our first option date to purchase the facility is September 2007. Our board of trustees would like to purchase the building at this first option date. For the stimulus grant, the allowable facility costs include a down payment for the purchase of an existing facility. Can charter schools apply, even if they have been open for several years?
Answer: Yes.
Question: Are the following allowable expenses:
Repair of roof on existing charter school building that was not replaced at the time when the building was originally renovated - the roof requires patches each year costing thousands of dollars.
Conversion of boys student bathrooms to girls student bathrooms in an existing school that will house only a girls school starting next academic year.
Installation of security system - there is currently a system in place, but with school growth, additional cameras are needed.
Expansion of telephone system to accommodate school growth.
Enhance heating system in basement of existing charter school where classrooms will be housed to accommodate growth.
Retro-fitting classrooms with Smart Classroom technology in an existing charter school.
Answer: All of the above activities are allowable with these funds.
Question: How much total stimulus funding is available? Some applicants would like to know how many awards there might be.
Answer: $632,000 is available from NYSED for this competition.
Question: Can a school receive Stimulus funds multiple times?
Answer: In the event that funds are not sufficient to fund all applicants with an average score of 75 or higher, preference will be given to applicants that have not previously received State Stimulus Funds. (See Review and Ranking section of RFP.)
Question: Can a five year old charter school apply, or is this only for newer schools? What if a charter school was recently renewed, does that count?
Answer: Any school chartered by the Board of Regents can apply.
Question: According to the eligible applicant section of the RFP any school that is chartered is eligible to apply. On the first page of the application form there are three check boxes that identify when a school was chartered. The first checkbox is 2004, 05 or 06. Can schools who were chartered prior to 2004 apply for these funds?
Answer: Yes, any school can apply regardless of when they were chartered.
Question: Can the grant be used for rent for a NEW facility?
Answer: Rent costs can not be supported by these funds.
Question: Is there a priority competition for these funds like last summer 2006?
Answer: If funds are not available for all proposals that score 75 points or higher, all new applicants will be considered first. See the section in the RFP on Review and Ranking.
