Teacher Resource and Computer Training Center RFP Due October 8, 2007 Questions and Answers

Question #1

Are non-profits or non-public school eligible to apply for a Teacher Center?

Answer #1:

No.  Non-profits and non-public schools are not eligible to apply for a Teacher Center.  Only public school and BOCES districts are eligible to apply for a Teacher Center as stipulated in Education Law 316.  Non-public schools, charter schools and public school districts can join and be served by a Teacher Center.

Question #2:

Are charter schools eligible to apply for a Teacher Center?

Answer #2:

Yes. Charter schools are eligible to apply for a Teacher Center either for a single district or consortium multi-district Teacher Center.

Question #3:

Can New York City charter schools receive Teacher Center services?

Answer #3:

Yes. The New York City Teacher Center currently serves over 800 non-public and charter schools.  Any charter school in New York City can request to be served by the New York City Teacher Center by contacting the Director, Aminda Gentile, at 212-475-3737.

Question #4:

Can a charter school belong to more that one Teacher Center?

Answer #4:

No.  School districts may join only one Teacher Center through the signature on the "Declaration of Participation" form, (see RFP).  That form needs to be signed by the Chief School Officer, and if it is a public school, it also must be signed by the president of the teacher bargaining unit (teacher union president).

Question #5:

How many Teacher Centers are anticipated to be funded with the $300,000?

Answer #5:

The $300,000 set-a-side for new Teacher Centers is the maximum amount to be distributed among all approved new applications.  Current funding levels for Teacher Centers range from $65,000 for small single district Centers to $16,800,000 for the New York City Teacher Center that has staff/programs in over 350 public schools.  Of the 130 current Teacher Centers, 36 Centers have budgets below $80,000.  Funding levels for multi-district Teacher Centers range from $79,000 for a small consortium to over $1.5 million to a Center that serves over 96 school districts.  Current program funding is also provided to support the 7 Regional Networks, 6 Statewide Committees and 3 Statewide Projects.

Question #6:

Does this grant ever support smaller grants to organizations to plan and develop a Center before launching one?

Answer #6:

No. Planning grants are not funded.

Question #7:

Where can I go for additional information?

Answer #7:

Information regarding the Teacher Center Program is available by contacting any of the current Teacher Centers or by searching their website: www.teachercenters.org
