October 2005
In 1991, the Board of Regents adopted a Regents policy statement entitled
“Parent Partnerships: Linking Families,
Communities, and Schools” (in .pdf). The Regents policy mandates
that “each school board develop and implement a comprehensive parent
partnerships policy.” The Regents have directed that the State
Education Department conduct a review to determine whether this policy has
been effective, is appropriate to education today, and is aligned with the
Regents’ current goals and institutional capacity. As the Regents seek
to update their policy, the Department invites you to discuss the role of
families in their children’s education and in holding schools accountable
for academic achievement.
The Office of School Improvement and Community Services (NYC) invites you to participate in one of a series of regional focus group meetings on “Creating Family Partnerships: A Public Forum to Discuss and Improve How We Serve Parents and Families”. These forums are intended to provide an opportunity for parents, teachers, administrators, and others interested in improved student achievement to review the Board of Regents' current family involvement policy and to solicit comment on ways in which partnerships may be strengthened. Focus group sessions will be conducted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. SED will provide a moderator and a series of guiding questions to be answered by participants. To register for a focus group meeting, please complete and submit a registration form (in Word).
Comments and suggestions may be submitted in writing, as well. All comments and suggestions will be reviewed by staff and consolidated in a final report to the Regents EMSC-VESID Committee on the Regents Policy Statement on Parent Involvement.
These meetings are being held at accessible sites. (Interpreters will be provided only upon request.) Copies of materials will be made available at each session. Materials will also be made available in alternate format, upon request. To request accommodations, please contact Alma Hueston at (518) 474-4715 at least 10 days in advance of the date of the meeting.
Questions about the policy or the public discussion forums? Please contact the Office of School Improvement and Community Services (NYC) at (718) 722-4553.
