"Helping Parents Guide Children's Behavior"

Helping Parents Guide Children’s Learning is essentially a toolbox filled with the tools necessary to present a lesson, namely:

  • Goals and Objectives

  • Special Considerations that may influence lesson delivery

  • Materials needed

  • Discussion Points that provide key points or brief reviews of research relevant to the lesson

  • Activities for both teaching parents and practicing with parents

The former component explains how practitioners can present the lesson to parents, while the latter provides opportunities for parents to apply their learned knowledge through interaction with their children, either at home or in the center.

  • Observations Over Time presents questions for practitioners to consider in determining the impact of the instruction.

  • Handouts and keys to handouts used in the lesson.

Drawing on the work described above, each lesson plan includes indication of the PEP scale, subscale, and level, as well as key parenting behaviors, most closely addressed by the lesson.

Line Callout 2 (Accent Bar): Scale I: Parent’s Support for Children’s Learning in the Home Environment
Scale II: Parent’s Role in Interactive Literacy Activities
Scale III: Parent’s Role in Supporting Child’s Learning in Formal Education Settings
Scale IV: Taking on the Parent Role

Line Callout 2 (Accent Bar): Level 1: limited awareness or acceptance, not comfortable
Level 2: beginning awareness, may be inconsistent, low comfort level
Level 3: some comfort in using desired behaviors, seeks out information and support
Level 4: routine and frequent use of desired behaviors
Level 5: adapts to child’s interests and abilities, extends child’s learning

Of course, users of PEP and trainees of Parenting Education are very cognizant of the interrelationship of the PEP subscales and the interrelationship of the key parenting behaviors.

In December 2005,  all programs received a copy of this tool on CD.  If you need additional copies you may e-mail us at emsceeri@mail.nysed.gov.
