The U.S. Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. In recognition of
this pivotal event, a recent Federal law designates every September 17th as
“National Constitution Day.” P.L. 108-447 requires educational institutions
receiving Federal funding “to hold an educational program on the United
States Constitution on September 17 of each year."
Since this date falls on a Saturday in 2005, schools can celebrate National Constitution Day on Friday, September 16.
New York State Education Law has long required specific instruction related to the U.S. Constitution and the New York State Constitution. The new federal requirement is consistent with the instruction required in New York State public and private schools.
The Education Department offers
links to
materials and resources that teachers and students may find helpful in
observing National Constitution Day. Further information on National
Constitution Day may be obtained from the
U.S. Department of Education.
