Implementation of New Mathematics Regents Examination In October 2003, the Independent Panel on Math A submitted its final report to the Commissioner and the Board of Regents. The Panel recommended that the Department restructure the Mathematics A Regents Examination, which the Department completed for the January 2004 test administration. The Panel further recommended that the Department develop and administer a new Mathematics Regents Examination in June 2006 that the typical student will take … after a one-year of high school mathematics.” It also recommended the formation of a Mathematics Standards Committee to “examine the existing Regents standards in mathematics, consider relevant research and other standards from the U.S. and other nations, and then propose modifications to the Regents mathematics standards to improve clarity, specificity, and functionality.” All three recommendations were accepted by the Commissioner and the Board of Regents. The Mathematics Standards Committee is now completing its work, which will be presented to the Board of Regents at its November 2004 meeting. The Department will conduct a public comment period from November 4 through December 3, 2004. Since it is anticipated that the Committee’s recommendations will suggest changes in high school mathematics, the Department is currently reconsidering the implementation date of this new examination.
