School Violence

11/28/06 - Project SAVE, Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act: Instruction in Civility, Citizenship and Character Education:  School districts and charter schools may now apply for grants to design, develop, and implement standards-based instruction on civility, citizenship, and character education.  The deadline for applications is January 24, 2007.  More information is available at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/funding/charactered07.htm.

10/3/06 - School Safety and Emergency Preparedness:  The recent spate of violence in schools across the nation serves as a reminder of the need to ensure that the children and staff in our schools are safe.  School safety and emergency preparedness plans should be current and easily available.   Resources and assistance are available from the New York State Center for School Safety at http://www.mhric.org/scss/.

8/22/06 - Persistently Dangerous Schools:  Seventeen New York State schools have been identified as "persistently dangerous" under the No Child Left Behind Act, and ten placed on a watch list. 

7/17/06 - Violent and Disruptive Incident Reporting System:  A question and answer document previously released by the Department regarding VADIR has been revised once more.  The new version is available at http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/sss/SAVE/vadir/

Dec. 2, 2004 - Safe Schools Against Violence in Education Act (SAVE) - The Commissioner has submitted the Safe Schools Against Violence Act Report to the Governor and Legislature as required by Section 2802 of the SAVE Act.  The report provides data obtained from the BEDS forms submitted by the districts for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 school years.  The report also identifies the limitations of the use of this data.  The full report and data files are available at the following web links:

September 9, 2004 - Press Release:  List of Schools with Most Weapons Possession Released - The State Education Department issued information today on possession or use of weapons in the schools. This information is being used as the basis for determining whether a school is "persistently dangerous"" under the No Child Left Behind Act.

August 18, 2003 - Press Release:  Two NYS Schools Designated as "Persistently Dangerous" under NCLB. 

March 2003 - The nation is now at an Orange Alert Level.  All schools should follow the directions for Orange Alert Level 2 in the following memo:  Orange Alert: Guidance.
