Updated Information on Green Cleaning: A new
field memorandum has been issued concerning the use of green
cleaning products in schools. It provides resources for school
districts to satisfy the requirements of the State law requiring the
use of environmentally sensitive cleaning and maintenance products
in schools (a.k.a. green cleaning). The field memo is

Annual Visual Inspections of School District and
BOCES Buildings:
Annual visual inspections were required to be completed no
later than November 15, 2006. The date for submission of annual
visual inspection data to the Department has been extended to March
15, 2007. Forms and instructions are available at

School Fire Safety Reinspections:
Section 807-a of Education Law was recently revised to require
“a reinspection of school buildings where a report of inspection
identified violations that, if uncorrected, would cause the Department
to deny an annual certificate of occupancy to such school building,
and shall require re-inspections until it is demonstrated to the
satisfaction of the Commissioner that said violations have been
corrected.” This change is effective for school fire inspections
beginning on or after December 15, 2006. For additional information,

Reminder of Annual AHERA Notifications to Employees and Parents: The federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA)
requires all schools to provide public notification regarding
inspections and other activities related to asbestos. Schools
must also make its asbestos management plan available for public

AHERA Requirements Reminder:
All public schools are required to comply with the 1986 federal Asbestos Hazard
Emergency Response Act (AHERA). AHERA requires all schools to inspect all buildings for the presence of
asbestos-containing building materials. Please make sure that your inspections

complete an Annual Visual Inspection no later than November 15,
