Occupations Education
Program Description/Overview Health
Occupations Education (HOE) prepares students for employment in the health care
industry and for postsecondary education. Supervised clinical experience is an
integral part of all HOE programs.
Learning Standards Specific learning standards related to Health Occupations/Health Services are
included in Standard 3B within the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS)
Learning Standards.

Updated Nurse Aide Curriculum
In response to the newly mandated nurse aide training program content
implemented by the New York State Department of Health, the State Education
Department convened a group of health occupations educators to do a crosswalk
between this new content and the State developed Nurse’s Assisting curriculum.
Please note that there have been no changes in the hour requirements for the
health occupations education programs. Two addendums have been developed to
supplement the Health Occupations Core Curriculum and the Nurse’s Assisting
Curriculum and are designed to be added into the current curriculum documents.
Pages marked with page numbers followed by “A” go directly into the Core
Curriculum or the Nurse’s Assisting Curriculum. Pages marked with page numbers
followed by a “B” go into the Nurse’s Assisting Supplement labeled 9/90.

The DOH has also mandated new clinical skills which must be documented on the

The
Guidelines for Submission of Application for Approval of a Non-Facility
Based Certified Nurse Aide Training Program 2008 edition contains
all of the information and forms necessary to submit an application for
approval of a school-based Nurse Aide program. This guide will assist
schools to plan, organize and provide programs for nurse aides; to facilitate
the approval/re-approval process and to develop curricular materials
that meet the New York State Education Department and New York State
Department of Health standards.

Area Health Education Center (AHEC)
Area Health Education Center (AHEC) systems at both the statewide and regional
levels are working with schools to increase the number of students pursuing
programs and careers in the health care field. The statewide office is located
in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Buffalo, State
University of New York. To view information about the (AHEC), which represents
